Body Time -

The body experiences time as rhythm, as cycles.

Life as we know it developed on the Earth in direct synchrony with the celestial rhythms of the planet. As the sun rose and set each day, as the cycle of seasons turned, life incorporated these rhythms into its structure. Our bodies have complicated systems of biological clocks inside them - they regulate our sleeping, energy level, breathing, heartbeat, hunger - nearly everything about our physical lives.

We use rhythm to communicate via language and music. When people converse, their brainwaves are often shown to synchronize. As I say a sentence, my brain goes through two or three delta waves. As you understand the sentence, your brainwaves are following the same pattern as mine - they are synchronizing to my rhythm. We may be communicating on more levels than we think!

The rhythms in music are directly related to rhythms of the human body. Tempo is based on the rhythm of walking, and of heartbeats. Music can draw out and accentuate rhythms that are already present in the body - fast dance music usually elevates the heartbeat.
